When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint
Services by using the default Team Site template, the home page includes two
default graphics. A Windows SharePoint Services graphic appears in the body of
the page, and a picture of a house in a circle appears near the site title. You
can change these graphics to customize your site. Changing the smaller graphic
requires a Windows SharePoint Services compatible Web page editor, such as
Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. No external programs are required to change the
larger graphic.
The first step in changing either of the default graphics
is to import the new graphic into your SharePoint site.
Import
Graphic
Note: You can add the graphic to any document or picture
library on your site. You might want to create a separate library for site
graphics and apply more strict permissions settings to that library. This can
help prevent site users from inadvertently deleting home page graphics. However,
all site users must have permission to view items in the library or they will be
prompted for a user name and password when they attempt to view the home
page.
1. On the Quick Launch bar on your home page, click on the word
“Documents”.
2. On the list toolbar for the document library, click “Create
Document Library”.
3. Click on Document Library Graphic.
4. On the “New
Document Library” page, enter a name such as “siteimages”.
5. In the
“Navigation” section, change “…Display Document on Quick Launch. . .” to
“No”.
6. Click “Create” button. Check the browser address field and make a
note of the URL needed to access the new library (the “/Forms/AllItems.aspx”
suffix does not need to be noted).
7. Click on “Upload Document”.
8. Click
Browse and locate the graphic you want to use, click “open” then “Save and
Close”.
9. Click browser “back” button and return to home
page.
Changing the Larger Graphic
1. Import the graphic as
described “above” under “Import Graphic”.
2. Go to the library where you
saved the graphic.
3. Click the file name of the graphic. The graphic opens
by itself in the browser.
4. Copy the URL from the Address bar of your Web
browser by selecting the URL and pressing CTRL+C.
5. On your site's home
page, click Modify Shared Page, point to Modify Shared Web Parts, and then click
Site Image.
6. The Site Image Tool Pane opens.
7. In the Image Link box,
paste the Web address of the file that you imported by pressing CTRL+V.
8.
Click OK.
Note: If new graphic does not appear, try repeating the steps in
this section, but replace each space in the Web address with
%20.
Changing the Smaller Graphic
Changing the smaller
graphic requires using a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible Web page editor
such as Office FrontPage 2003. Note that earlier versions of FrontPage CANNOT be
used. The following steps tell you how to complete this task by using Office
FrontPage 2003.
1. Add the desired graphic to a document or picture
library on your site as described earlier in "Import graphic." As with the
larger graphic, make sure that all site users have permission to view items in
the library where you add the graphic.
2. Go to the library where you saved
the graphic.
3. Click the file name of the graphic. The graphic opens by
itself in the browser.
4. Copy the URL from the Address bar of your Web
browser by selecting the URL and pressing CTRL+C.
5. Open Office FrontPage
2003.
6. In Office FrontPage 2003, click File and then click Open Site.
7. Type the URL to your Windows SharePoint Services site, and then click
Open.
8. Double-click the file name of the home page, default.aspx.
9.
Right-click the graphic, and then click Picture Properties.
10. Click the
General tab.
11. In the Picture field, paste the Web address to the new
graphic by pressing CTRL+V.
12. On the Appearance tab, do one of the
following:
13. If you do not know the width and height of the desired
graphic, clear the Specify size check box.
14. If you want to specify the
width and height of the graphic, enter the dimensions in the Width and Height
fields.
15. Click OK and save changes.
Note: Specifying a larger
graphic than the default will also increase the size of the table cell holding
it, changing the layout of the home page.
